Breakthrough’s Youth Rights Advocates in India are made up of young men and women who undergo a comprehensive human rights training program addressing issues of sexuality, gender and HIV/AIDS.
They take their training out into communities to host: public theatre performances, discussion forums, informational booths, and interactive sessions, which lead to necessary discussions on these sometimes difficult and challenging issues.
In 2007 alone, close to 3,000 Rights Advocates received training. Their outreach and education initiatives reached a whopping 33,000 individuals in groups ranging from migrant works and young Dalit women and men to supervisors and leaders of community organizations.
With the new knowledge that these communities have obtained from the Rights Advocates, they are empowered to do their own outreach efforts to reduce stigma and discrimination and educate on women’s rights and sexuality issues across India.
