The Tri Continental Film Festival began in Latin America in 2002, in Africa in 2003 and in Asia in 2004, was the primary platform for human rights cinema from the three continents that form part of the global South.
Films selected for the festival were judged by a top jury including filmmakers, film critics and scholars as well as artists. During the course of the year, films from the festival are also screened at universities, cultural institutions, among practitioners of human rights, citizens' groups as well as general audiences.
