An amazing high school that Breakthrough worked with to create our immigration video game ICED - I Can End Deportation - The Newcomers High School, in Queens NY, placed #6 on the nation’s top high school list!
The students were instrumental in the development of our game in that they gave amazing feedback on the design of level 1, the city. It has a distinct NYC feel (note the 7-like train). They also gave great ideas on how players could get points for positive activities like participating in community events or recycling.
From an article in WPIX about the school and win, “Newcomers High School, which enrolls close to 1,000 students who speak 30 different languages and offers eight Advanced Placement courses, placed 6th on the coveted list… Students say the school’s environment has helped them through the transition of moving to the United States, while teaching them about the customs of other countries.”
