"Why can't America have human rights?" is a question Breakthrough posed to over 600 students, human rights leaders and activists at a public forum at the Riverside Church in New York City. The campaign, based on this question allows us to look at human rights not as something that solely exists on international shores and third world countries, but as an important part of the way people are treated in the United States.
In the public forum, representatives from different movements such as the labor movement, women's rights movement, Native American movement, immigrant rights movement and more came together to show that even though groups have individual struggles, we should unite our strengths in the U.S. as part of the greater human rights movement.
