Breakthrough’s human rights work in the U.S. tries to educate audiences on race and immigrant rights, namely that America should be a place that respects basic human rights, but now unfair immigration laws are denying basic due process to immigrants that live in the United States. These laws affect ALL immigrants: legal permanent residents, asylum seekers, students and undocumented people.
Our Campaigns:
“End Homeland Guantanamos,” campaign informs audiences that since September 11th, both legal and undocumented immigrants have had their human rights and right to due process stripped in the face of sweeping national security concerns. Gross human rights violations have taken place through raids and arbitrary detention and deportation, the proliferation of inhumane degrading detention centers, which has resulted in the death of many, and the militarization of the US-Mexico border.
Visit our 3D interactive site that lets visitors experience life as an undercover journalist behind the walls of an immigrant detention center, www.homelandgitmo.com.
“ICED – I Can End Deportation,” Breakthrough’s video game on immigration, ICED – I Can End Deportation, at www.icedgame.com has been played by over 100,00 players since the February 18, 2008 launch. ICED puts you in the shoes of an immigrant to illustrate how unfair immigration laws deny due process and violate human rights.
“Restore the Right to Due Process,” campaign has informative and creative videos of those affected by immigrant detention and deportation, fun animation, interactive sites like www.icedgame.com and homelandgitmo.com and downloadable toolkits w/talking points and info that speak to restoring the right to due process for ALL immigrants.
“Speak Up! Act Up!” aimed to encourage youth to be active in their communities to bring about positive change through nationwide public forums and cultural events. Simply because youth are not able to vote, doesn’t mean they can’t affect change—they are tomorrow’s change makers!
